01 · The challenge

One Bureau. Many systems.

The Census Bureau needed a robust, scalable and secure way to ingest, process and analyze the vast amounts of data collected across its survey operations. Its legacy systems were siloed, lacked real-time analytics and weren’t built for the petabytes of data expected from specialized surveys and enterprise-wide research. As an older data platform was retired, the Bureau needed to move its archiving responsibilities without disruption. The new platform also had to work seamlessly with the Bureau’s core systems for data collection, dissemination and management.

02 · The solution

One platform for every program.

As prime contractor, we built a modern, cloud-native enterprise data lake that gives Census programs one platform for survey operations, processing, analytics and dissemination. We developed reusable data pipelines and automated workflows that connect the Bureau’s enterprise systems under consistent data standards. To reduce technical debt, we moved legacy databases and file formats to open-source technologies and introduced modern data science tools and scalable microservices. Throughout, we worked in Agile sprints with joint design reviews, built testing into every release and supported the platform’s security authorization to federal standards.

03 · The impact

Ready for 2030 and beyond.

The Bureau moved from siloed legacy environments to a scalable, secure architecture built for high-volume, mission-critical processing. Self-service dashboards and analytics put insights directly in the hands of Census teams, while open-source technologies reduced legacy technical debt and cost. The platform supports the Bureau’s specialized survey operations today and lays the foundation for 2030 Census modernization.
