Climbing the Accessibility Mountain: How AI and Human Insight Drive Progress

A Journey, Not a Destination

The accessibility journey is a mountain: challenging, ongoing, and worth every step. AI is helping cut new trails, but it is human judgment that keeps us moving forward.

AI isn’t just a trend; it's becoming a new way of life. From transforming how to shop, work, and navigate the world, what feels like an innovation headline is a daily reality for others.

The Role of AI in Accessibility

As AI advances, it is transforming the way we approach accessibility. Everyday tasks are more seamless for people with disabilities while also reshaping how companies like BLN24 meet critical requirements like Section 508 compliance.

Where a compliance check once took days, AI can now identify potential issues in minutes. This doesn’t mean replacing human expertise;

it means creating efficiencies that allow us to focus on deeper, more nuanced aspects of accessibility. The human component remains essential because technology alone cannot capture the lived experience of those navigating the digital world.

Human Insight in Action

Our colleague Trinh Martin is a great example for AI integration. She emphasizes that AI is a quick check, but it is not a complete solution. In testing Section 508, AI might only provide 20-30% accuracy, leaving the majority of work to manual testing. Because compliance tests are pass/fail, thoroughness is critical.

Trinh, who is blind, uses a blend of AI manual tools. Trinh uses ANDI and CCA for manual testing, layered with AI insights to ensure accuracy. In addition, she uses tools like Be My Eyes, ChatGPT, and Gemini in her daily life, apps that allow her to shop, navigate online platforms, and engage with content independently.

Trinh knows that these tools are only as effective as the information they are given. For blind individuals, providing that input often requires extra effort, and inaccurate AI responses can create barriers rather than remove them. Her experience underscores the importance of building AI systems that are not only powerful but inclusive by design.

Looking Ahead

Accessibility is not a destination but a mountain we continue to climb. Ten years ago, many of today’s tools didn’t exist, and progress since then has been remarkable. Yet, the journey ahead is long.

AI can speed up reviews, flag compliance issues, and expand independence for individuals with disabilities. But, AI cannot replace the insight, training, and lived experiences of those who use these technologies every day.

At BLN24, we believe progress equals combining the speed of AI with the depth of human perspective. Together, they create solutions hat are not only compliant, but meaningful, practical, and inclusive.
